This summer, beside Dota 2, I enjoyed playing Black Myth: Wukong. Just a few minutes ago, Game Science, the creators of Black Myth: Wukong, released a teaser trailer on YouTube with a new game they are working on called Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
The announcement continues the team’s tradition of updating players every year on August 20, and this time they shared a CG short to confirm that development on a brand new project has begun.
The choice of Zhong Kui as the central figure comes from the studio’s desire to take a fresh step forward after the success of Wukong. The developers explained that while the first game has been well received, they now want to challenge themselves with bolder ideas and new creative directions. Zhong Kui, a legendary figure in Chinese mythology known for quelling demons, felt like a natural fit for this ambition. The team believes that by exploring his story they can introduce refreshing changes and look at past mistakes while also pushing the series into new territory. At the same time, they assured players that the westward journey with Wukong is far from over. Btw, Wukong was first revealed with its teaser trailer in August 2020, and it officially released on August 20, 2024, so it took 4 years. I’m curious if Zhong Kui will be released faster now that they have the experience and technology already available.
If you want to see a full gameplay of the Wukong game, check the video below.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui will remain a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese myth and folklore, following the same general structure that players have seen before. The difference lies in the perspective, as this time the player will not embody the Monkey King. The team wants to explore the distinct identity of Zhong Kui and the unique gameplay opportunities that come with him. Although the story outline is still being shaped, the developers are enthusiastic about telling new stories that will feel familiar enough for Wukong fans while also surprising them in unexpected ways. The game is planned for release on PC and all major consoles, though the exact details will be finalized closer to launch. As for when that launch might be, Game Science admitted that there is no release window yet, encouraging fans to keep an eye on their official website and social media channels for updates. From this point forward, all official accounts that once operated under the name Black Myth: Wukong will transition to the broader Black Myth brand, making it easier for players to follow news about the entire series.
With Black Myth: Wukong already one of the most talked about upcoming games, the reveal of Black Myth: Zhong Kui signals the beginning of a larger universe of stories inspired by Chinese mythology. Game Science has shown that it can capture attention with its visuals, worldbuilding, and gameplay, and now it is expanding its ambitions to ensure that the Black Myth series becomes something much greater than a single hero’s tale.
I am impressed by the quality that comes out of China.
