Today marks 3 months since I started working as a Scientific Officer at ERCEA in Brussels, Belgium. It is a beautiful experience, and I enjoy my work here, especially regarding the Synergy Grants. The work environment is excellent, with colleagues of many nationalities who are great to be around.
When searching for an apartment in Brussels, many people use immoweb.be. However, if you are tight on time and budget, you can also use Facebook groups such as Appartement à louer / flat to rent – Saint-Gilles et Ixelles (Bruxelles) or Indians in Brussels/Belgium.
I live near the Schuman metro station (Berlaymont), and my workplace is near the Rogier metro station (only 20 minutes away by metro). During my first two weeks living in Brussels, I lived in the Evere area of Brussels (this is where I also enjoyed for the first time in more than 3 years Romanian food in a Romanian restaurant called Restaurant de L`Opera), which was 30 minutes away by bus from my workplace.
Until now, I have had a positive experience with Brussels, being a city full of international people, well dressed and young. Well, what can you expect from a capital, right?! There are many things to do here and places to go out; however, alone is not fun because Dipty is home in Germany. When I went home to Germany for the Christmas holidays, I bought chocolates from here for Dipty, such as Leonidas, Neuhaus and Pierre Marcolini. The best one, according to everyone I asked, and to Dipty, is the chocolate from Pierre Marcolini, which is also the most expensive.
My favorite place to go and eat in Brussels is a Chinese restaurant called Xu Ji, which you can find as „XU JI – Restaurant Chinois – Brussels“ on Google. I also tried Churros with Nutella and Belgian Waffles (with strawberries and Nutella) here in Brussels for the first time.
What else can I share with you? Ah yes, the monthly pass in Brussels, which includes any metro, bus, and tram, costs 52 € per month, and if you want to have the train included, then it costs 65 € per month (I was advised not to bring my car here, and I think it was good advice). A room to rent costs usually around 600-700 € per month in a shared flat, including everything. In Brussels, you can find many Asian/Indian supermarkets. Prices are similar or a bit more expensive than in Germany. The popular supermarkets here are called Carrefour (this is where I mostly go due to it being close to my office) and Delhaize, and to buy in bulk, people go to Colruyt, which is cheaper. One of the best supermarkets for bread, vegetables, and fruits is FreshMed, located near the Thieffry metro station. People are warm and friendly, and most of them speak French. The bookstores in Brussels have so many beautiful books, especially those related to the arts.
