The monthly costs of living in Germany

I wrote here about the monthly costs for an apartment in New Delhi, India, which are around 60 € per month if there are no unexpected expenses and one pays no rent (renting an apartment like this in the same location would cost around 200 € per month).

For the last few days, I have been thinking about writing down the monthly costs we have for the newly rented apartment here in Chemnitz, Germany. Of course, this apartment is also bigger (120 m2) than the one in India (75 m2). However, in this post, I will write about both the apartment and our extra personal expenses, such as the smartphone abo, food expenses, etc. To make it easier to follow, I will create two tables.

These are the monthly costs for the apartment:

Our Apartment Expenses in Chemnitz, Germany Monthly Bills
Apartment Rent (Warm, including Gas) 1.185 €
Car Garage Rent 80 €
Electricity (from Naturwerke) 86 €
Water I don’t know as of now
Internet (from Telekom 1000 MB/s download and 500 MB/s upload) 78 €
TOTAL 1.429 €

These are the monthly costs for food, insurance, etc.:

Personal Expenses in Chemnitz, Germany Monthly Bills
Insurances (Personal, Car, Apartment, Dental, etc.) 242,08 €
Smartphone Abo (from Vodafone) 27,49 €
Netflix Abo 18 €
Food Expenses (including going out) ~ 1.000 €
Petrol for my car ~ 50 €
Household Supplies/Toiletries ~ 50 €
TOTAL 1.387,57 €

As you can see, if one has to pay rent, the total monthly cost of living in Germany (for two people) is 2.816,57 €, without including the costs of clothing and other unexpected costs. And these costs are for a small city like Chemnitz, not for a big one like Berlin, Frankfurt, or München. I wonder how much less the costs will be if one owns the apartment. I suppose not much less.

I don’t know how much I will have to pay for the water bill as of now because it usually comes once a year. Regarding once-per-year bills, I also pay 127 € tax for my Dacia Duster car and 139 € for its ADAC insurance. In addition, I also pay ~ 60 € once per year for my web hosting from Hetzner, and 89,90 € for Amazon Prime. So yes, you need a 3.000 € Netto salary per month to live a peaceful and simple good life in Germany, something that a researcher is earning, thanks to the TV-L E13.
