The story of how I became a vegetarian

Today marks 11 years since I stopped eating meat/fish dishes. Since mid February 2014, I haven’t eaten meat and fish but only vegetables, milk, eggs, cheese, and other dairy products.

How it happened: By mid-February 2014, when I was still living in Heidelberg-Altstadt, I was inside the Stuzzico pizzeria, when I saw a delicious-looking great-smelling pizza with spicy salami on the table near me. I suddenly had so much water in my mouth as rarely happened before. I was asking myself: why am I having so much water in my mouth suddenly?! Then it came to me: I ate no meat/fish dish for around 3 weeks! So if I was not even aware for 3 weeks that my body didn’t eat any meat/fish dishes, then maybe this is just a reaction due to being fed this type of food by the family since I was a small kid, and is not my body’s true need, I was telling myself. Then I continued having a thought dialog with myself: – So if this is just a reaction and not a true need, then dear mind, let’s not eat meat/fish dishes anymore, ok?! – Ok!, my mind replied.

And there you have it! since that moment, I have been a vegetarian. I eat dairy products like milk, cheese, and eggs, but since a few years, I rarely eat eggs, maybe once every two months or so.

Ok, let me tell you a not so funny story, and a funny story as well now that it came to my mind:

The not-so-funny story: In 2015, while still living in Heidelberg and working as a working student for SAP in Walldorf, I was having an evening walk when suddenly I saw a sushi restaurant. As I never entered such a restaurant before, and because I knew that now I am vegetarian, and sushi is made with fish usually (if not always?!), I thought it would be great to have at least a vegetarian soup in such a fancy restaurant. So, I went inside, sat down at a small table, and received the menu. Because it was the first time, I didn’t know what to order, so I just said in German: I don’t want to order sushi, only a simple hot soup, but without meat/fish, because I don’t eat such things. After a few minutes of waiting, the waiter brought me the soup, which was looking delicious and hot. Then, I took 1-2 spoons, and suddenly I had a bad feeling! This doesn’t taste vegetarian, WTH! The Japanese or Chinese person maybe could not speak German well, or maybe I didn’t express myself clearly enough, who knows, because guess what ?! Instead of telling me that they don’t have vegetarian soups, he brought me a shrimp soup, from which he removed the shrimp, thinking that I just wanted to eat the broth only. OMG!!! :)) I found that out after having 1-2 sips, of course! not before!

The funny story: In Spring 2016, while living in Berlin where I was working as an Online Marketing Manager for JIB, I used to buy my groceries mainly from Kaufland. One weekend while in Kaufland, I saw different brands of kidney bean soup in cans. I was surprised because I don’t remember ever seeing so many brands of kidney bean soup in one place. I was thinking to myself: I miss Romanian food and haven’t had kidney soup in a long time, so what if I try all these German brands, to see which one tastes better?! Therefore, I checked around 6 different brands and found that only 4 were having a text or label that they were vegetarian. So, I bought all 4 cans of kidney bean soup, all 4 being from different brands, and went home ready to attack at least one that evening with red onion, salt, and bread. The first can was good, and was already wondering how the other 3 will be. Spoiler of the week: farty duck incoming! The next day, I had the second can, which was also good. Then, the next day, I tried the third can, which was very good, better than the first two cans. I was happy until now and could not wait to try the forth one tomorrow so that I can tell which one I like the most. Then, on the next day, I had the last can as well, and was good as well, at the level of the first two cans I had. The decision was easy: I liked the third one the most! I was happily laying on my bed, thinking about the meaning of life, which, according to Osho, is celebration, and thought about how good the kidney bean soup in the third can was, and that I will buy only that brand from now on when I will go to Kaufland. After a few minutes, already being dark outside and before preparing for sleep, I was thinking: – The third can was so much more delicious than the other ones! It cannot be such a big difference/too good to be true, so let me go to the trash bin in the Kitchen where I threw all empty kidney bean soup cans, and see what ingredients made this one so special because I still cannot put my mind away from it. So, I went to the kitchen, picked it up from the trash bin, and then while looking for the ingredients, the shock: this third kidney bean soup can, despite having a green label (it was not written „vegetarian“ on it like on the other 3 cans) had a small percentage of pork fat paste as an ingredient! OMG! :)) Then I was telling to myself: – What kind of vegetarian are you?! From all 4 cans, you liked only one, and that one was not a vegetarian one! :))

Being vegetarian, I feel much lighter, at peace, and smarter than ever before. On top of this, my sense of humor and connection with existence grew exponentially.
